U.S. launches secret spy satellite

secret_satellite_launch.JPG

The U.S. Air Force on Wednesday said it launched an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral in Florida, carrying a top secret satellite into space.
The rocket lifted off in the morning, carrying a NROL-38 payload for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). Details of the satellite, its mission and whether it reached orbit was not released due to security reasons. But reports indicated it was likely a new communications satellite. ' However, the Air Force later did say the launch was part of the Defense Department's ongoing efforts to maintain assured, affordable access to space through 2030. The program replaced the existing fleet of launch systems with two families of launch vehicles -- the Boeing Delta IV and Lockheed Martin Atlas V -- built and operated by Pentagon's prime contractor, United Launch Alliance (ULA).
The ULA's next launch and the NRO's next mission, the Delta IV NROL-15, is scheduled for June 28.
The NROL-38 reconnaissance spacecraft lifted off at 8:28 a.m. EDT (1228 GMT) from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, atop a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas 5 rocket. It marked a milestone flight for the rocket company, a partnership between Lockheed Martin and Boeing.
"Congratulations to the NRO and to all the mission partners involved in this critical national security launch," Jim Sponnick, ULA vice president for Mission Operations, said in a statement. "This launch marks an important milestone as we celebrate the 50th successful Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) mission, with 31 Atlas 5 and 19 Delta 4 missions flown since August 2002."
The Chantilly, Va.-based NRO manages the design, construction and operation of the United States' network of intelligence-gathering spy satellite.
ULA officials broadcast the initial liftoff of the Atlas 5 rocket and spy satellite live via satellite and webcast, but cut off the video stream several minutes after launch due to the classified nature of the mission.
The NROL-38 mission will contribute toward the military's national defense program, though the details of how will be kept under wraps. Few specifics of the satellite's deign and purpose are publicly available, and the mission went into a media blackout shortly after liftoff.
The launch comes just days after the end of another secret government mission, the second flight of the Air Force's classified X-37B space plane.
The robotic vehicle, also known as Orbital Test Vehicle-2 (OTV-2), landed June 16 at California's Vandenberg Air Force Base, ending a 15-month mission kept largely confidential.
Today's mission is the first of three NRO launches on ULA vehicles planned for the next two months. Next in line is the NROL-15 mission due to launch on a Delta 4 rocket June 28 from Space Launch Complex-37, also at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
"Twelve of the 50 EELV launches have been NRO missions and these have been vital to our overall mission of delivering on commitments critical to our national security," said Bruce Carlson, director of the National Reconnaissance Office. "I thank and congratulate ULA and the EELV program for the tremendous performance and achievement of this very impressive and noteworthy milestone."
The Atlas 5 rocket that launched today stands 191.2 feet (58.3 meters) tall and includes one main booster powered by the RD AMROSS RD-180 engine. Its Centaur upper stage was powered by a single Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne RL10A-4 engine.

Authorities described the singer's ex-husband as a suspect in the case, and said early indications were that the Taliban were not involved, according to police official Imtiaz Altaf.

Shamshad TV Afghanistan interview with Ghazal Javed in 2010
Ghazala Javed, who recorded scores of songs in her native Pashto language and became a household name among young, progressive ethnic Pashtuns in northwest Pakistan, had just left a beauty salon and was driving home with her father when gunmen on a motorcycle raced towards their car and sprayed it with bullets, Altaf said.
Javed was hit with six bullets and pronounced dead at a hospital in Peshawar, the capital of Pakistan's Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, according to hospital official Rahim Afridi. Javed's father also was killed, police said.
In recent years the rise of the Pakistani Taliban in the region and the group's ban against singing and dancing made it difficult for Javed and other musical artists to perform and record songs in Pakistan. Javed recorded and taped many of her latest songs and music videos in nearby Dubai.
Last year Javed made headlines when she asked for a divorce from her husband after she reportedly found out that he had at least one other wife. It was a rare decision in a deeply conservative and male-dominated society where many view a woman's demand for a divorce as a dishonor to the husband.
Shortly after Monday night's shooting police released a statement saying Javed's sister had accused her ex-husband and two of his acquaintances
Investigators said a search was underway for the three men.

Russian Missile Test spikes UFO phenomenon over Middle East

Authorities in several countries were alerted following sightings of a strange swirling object in the sky.
Reports came in from Georgia, Armenia, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and other countries in the region, observers described the spectacle as a swirling, shining object that gave off a smoke trail. While rumors have persisted that the object was some sort of missile test there have been no confirmations of operations being carried out in the area at that time.
The object was first seen when journalist Rob Stevens posted an image to his Twitter account. Stevens wrote, "Just Seen a strange UFO over Fheis. It hovered, and then made a swirl and disappeared."

Ynet News reports that the missile test resulted in hundreds of calls to Israeli police stations. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that the missile test originated in the Astrakhan region in central Russia and was spotted in several other countries along the way, including Armenia, Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.
"It most likely spun out of control and its remnants and the fuel was what people saw," Israeli Astronomical Association Chairman Dr. Yigal Pat-El told Ynet News. "It reached a height of 200-300 kilometers and that's why it was seen from so many locations."
The Jerusalem Post Yaakov Lappin also confirmed the test, tweeting: "Mysterious light explained. Russia announces it carried out successful inter-continental ballistic missile test."
You can view several other videos of the missile sighting taken from Syria and one allegedly shot in Iran.
Video game players may appreciate the observation of one particular YouTube commenter, who said of the video Alan Wake: "IN SPACE!_ Great flashlight."

CDT and Allies Take Aim at Government’s Secret Protocol For Wireless Shutdowns

by Kevin Bankston

Did you know the government has a secret emergency protocol for initiating citywide shutdowns of cell phone networks? It's called Standard Operating Procedure or "SOP" 303, and as CDT and its allies explained in a filing to the FCC yesterday, it's flatly unconstitutional.
Yesterday, CDT, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Public Knowledge and other allied groups filed our second round of comments responding to the FCC's inquiry into wireless service interruptions. In our first round of comments we outlined the serious First Amendment problems posed by government shutdowns of wireless networks and urged the FCC to clearly regulate against the practice. Our reply comments address a variety of issues, summarized here, but one key goal was to put the spotlight on SOP 303, which several other comments filed with the FCC—including from cell phone carriers—endorsed as a reasonable procedure.
The details of SOP 303 are secret. We literally have one paragraph of description in one government report to go on. But even based on that description it's clear that the protocol fails to meet the First Amendment's strict requirements for when the government engages in a prior restraint on speech. And most certainly, as we described in detail in our first round of comments, a wireless service interruption will restrain the lawful speech of hundreds, thousands, or even millions of Americans.
As we explain in our comments, filed yesterday:
As summarized in a report by the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee ("NSTAC")1, SOP 303 provides that State Homeland Security Advisors are empowered to decide whether or not to terminate wireless service, whether in a localized area or "within an entire metropolitan area," and those decisions are approved and relayed to service providers not by the courts but by the Department of Homeland Security's National Coordinating Center for Telecommunications ("NCC"). There is no provision for any judicial review, whether before or after the service interruption, and certainly no provision for notice and opportunity to challenge for affected cell phone users.

Indeed, there is no court in the loop at all, at any stage in the SOP 303 process. The Executive Branch, untethered by the checks and balances of court oversight, clear instruction from Congress, or transparency to the public, is free to act as it will and in secret. In fact, it already has: the NSTAC report notes that U.S. authorities in July 2005 initiated the shutdown of wireless services in multiple transit tunnels in New York City but fails to mention any court review before or after, and the details of the shutdown remain secret. Recent press coverage indicates that there have been additional wireless service interruptions since, yet the details of those shutdowns—and the details of what if any judicial oversight attended them—are also shrouded in mystery.
This state of affairs cannot be allowed to stand. The government should not have the secret, unchecked authority to turn off the networks through which we all communicate every day. We reiterate our original call to the FCC to ensure through rulemaking that the federal government will not, and that state and local governments cannot, interrupt wireless services as a matter of policy in an emergency. Because even in an emergency, wireless shutdowns are never the right choice.

10 Skills a Man Must Possess

You’re born without them, spend a lifetime acquiring them, and check them at the door on your way out. Brains and charm are fine, but a real guy needs to know how to do real stuff. Here, a collection of objects no man should be without. How many do you have? Learn to be perfect!

10. Military & Outdoor Know-How

military know how
Okay you like it or not but if you are flabby, you are not going to be get liked by the majority so you better know how to drop and give the perfect push up. A man should know the basic skills of every major sport, football, basketball, soccer, baseball, hockey, and various forms of non athletic games such as poker, pool, and fishing. Attention to detail and knowledge of a game are vital. Remember you are her knight in shining armor so you should know how a knight to act in the modern society, practically it means you should be aware of how to run rapid in a canoe, hang food in the wild, skipper a boat, shoot straight, tackle steep drops on a mountain bike, escape a rip current, navigate with a map and compass and at least shine shoes.

9. Primitive Skills

build a fire
The seemingly primitive skills are often overlooked but you never know when all of sudden you need them. Lighting a fire is only half the battle, the way you build a fire – that is, how you arrange the wood – can affect how long the fire will last and the amount of heat it’ll give off during that time. If you can’t survive in wilderness, you are of no use! So a man must also know how to build a shelter and find portable water in the wild, besides building fire.

8. Deal with automotives

Every guy would have been in a situation like a date with a beautiful girl and all of a sudden your car stops or may be when you reach back to your car after a romantic date, you realize you have forgotten the keys inside the car and then she looks at you with those innocent wide eyes assuming you know how to fix it. Surprise ladies, we are not all mechanics. However, after we face this tragedy, we shall realize that a guy must know how to jump start a car. Worth-mentioning here is that a man should know to deal a blow out, a punctured tire, drive in snow, conquer an off-road obstacle, maneuver the car out of a skid and better would be to know checking trouble codes, waxing it and replacing fan belts and so on and so forth.

7. Surviving Extremes

I might not be believing in 2012 end but many do! And many who don’t can’t deny the extremes one can face anytime, may be the next moment earth jolts and makes your luxury an extreme. Don’t take it too hard but yes it’s a fact so a real man should not deny it either since you might be living on a Dante’s peak or awaiting a cyclone, at least learn to survive extremes of temperature, since Darwin claim that nature protects those who are fittest seems to be true. Good for you and people associated to you shall be if you are good enough to survive a tornado and a flood. A little courage is all what we need but lack, never hesitate to rescue a boater who has capsized because one day you might have to escape a sinking car.

6. Technology

In the world of fast moving, you have no time to leave your computer at the repair shop to get it fixed. So the first thing you should know is how to protect your computer, not from your partner or kids but you must know fixing it. You can backup before hand. Installing a graphics card and calibrating HDTV settings should be a piece of cake for you. Know to take a perfect portrait and retouching digital photos, knowing to make a home video would be great.

5. Cooking and Kitchen Chores

Wives cooking for you and waiting at home are now times of yore. They have to go office like you, they are as busy as you so either you’d have to share the work or if you are single you have to be dependent on yourself, remember your mom will one day stop leaving cute notes on the food she left for you in fridge. Buying outdoor food for daily basis is I would say stupidity since you’ll be prone to Diabetes always so you better cook yourself and if you are married and she works then don’t be authoritative to be a man, you’ll have to share the chores with her equally and honestly hunting or relying on barbecue only neither brings you even close to a cook nor you can live healthy with it.

4. Teach your Kids (if you have)

Okay so mommy might not be there always, so before moving on to teaching the kids, you should teach yourself how to change diapers and clean poos and poops. Now when your child is growing up, it’s the daddy’s responsibility to cast a line but be sure to lend them a hand and teach them the rough stuff like how to change a tire, throw a spiral, fly a stunt kite, drive a stick shift, parallel park, tie a bowline or necktie and to ride a bike so that you can be a good daddy.

3. Good Conversation and Making Out

A good conversation is a skill. An ideal form of communication is an art that many men don’t possess. For a successful conversation, the partners must achieve a workable balance of contributions, which a man has to allow and not to dominate. He should know the interests of others to pick up a mutually interesting topic. A man should know how to do this and keep a handful of humor and in-jokes, he should also be aware of the most current affairs. And remember its the good conversation that matters the most in making a relation successful and yes making out and making love skills do matter when you have to make up a permanent bond.

2. Deal Emergency and First Aid

Now this could mean life or death. We shall not state this with restraint about the possible significance of this skill. You should know how to perform a hand’s only-CPR, reverse hypothermia and perform the Heimlich. Dressing wounds and contusions are a must know. You never know when the weird things can happen, it would be really good for you and others if you knew the basics to treat frostbite, a burn, help a seizure victim, treat a snakebite and remove a tick. Not only this skill would make you the hero but it will keep everyone around you safer.

1. Master Key Workshop Tools for Indoor Fixing Things

With our lives becoming more driven by technology, blue-collar labor has been replaced with more white-collar employment, and teenagers are becoming better at programming Web sites than swinging hammers. But a man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with a WD-40, a vice grip and a roll of duct tape as said by Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino. Calling a professional would cause you a many bucks not only when you are starting your home but every now and then since most household problems, from grating doors to leaky faucets, can be fixed easily by anyone with a clue. Grab and learn some basic workshop tools so that you can patch a radiator hose, paint n’ frame a wall, fix a faucet cartridge or a windowpane, shovel the right way, change a single-pole switch and sharpen a knife. Fixing things by yourself will save you a lot of greens and be more satisfying than calling in a professional.
And by the way, here we shall include ironing and folding a shirt and sewing a button to a shirt, reading an electric meter and growing food at your backyard are essentials. Don’t get too scared with all this since these are basics to start an independent living unless you are rich born. Be a real man and start paddling canoes to get ready to move the heavy stuff!

10 Renowned Personalities Who are Worst Speakers

Over a period of time, there have been celebrity speakers who weren’t able to communicate and gave live speeches before their audience. Celebrities are more subject to critics and public takes more notice of their gestures, facial expressions and reactions. As most of their speeches and words are being recorded, they have to be more careful about their public speaking.

10. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

He is the president of Iran and has been a worst speaker after his elections. Mostly his speeches are about arrogant and dissented. His speeches and talks are mostly inconvenient and sound less political. There has been a lot of controversy regarding his speech on “World without Zionism”. The bad and somehow biased translation caused some problems. The statement “wiped off the map” has seen a lot of controversy and translations. Many news sources quoted as English medium means “a place to “cause a place to stop existing.” Lot of misunderstandings created as a result of his statement.
A foreign minister of Iran cleared up that no one could remove or eliminate a country from a map or made it stop existing. Whatever happened was a result of mistranslation and careless selection of words. So he is considered as a bad speaker for his audience.

9. Tiger Woods

What is it that makes this guy a completely bad speaker? Nothing much though has been noticed about him much but how is he considered a bad speaker? The answer is that he is a no speaker. And a “no Speaker” is a bad speaker. When you are a celebrity, you must stay in touch with your fans and people. No interviews, no clips, no serious statements were from his side, except a few ordinary “blog press releases” and some classic you tube game clips. Ordinary blog press can be done by normal bloggers and the style of addressing the audience is much better. Just some little words on great fan support and nothing very astounding or promising from his side. He is an excellent player but a very bad speaker and communicator. These kinds of blogs and speaking may not give him much fame.

8. Mark Sanford

What are the things that make him a public bad speaker? Quite a few can be mentioned. After being caught over an extramarital affair with Maria Belén Chapur, an Argentina based journalist, he disappeared from public. He behaved and spoke very childishly and weirdly during the press conference. After watching his confession, it sounds like a speech of an ordinary teenager boy who is caught by his parents. During the 18 minutes of his Unplugged Confession, he looks confused stressed and about to cry. While speaking about his absence live where he talks about his absence, the expressions on his face aren’t suitable for a Public speaker. Many celebrities may have gone through such circumstances, but they were able to communicate and speak well about their issues. Mark for sure lacks this quality of good public speaking.

7. Caroline Kennedy

She is a great woman with so many skills and talents. She happens to be a woman of tradition that marks so much diversity and skill with her personality. When she went public after being appointed at a New York Senate seat, came out. Her eye contact and her gestures were really strange and weird. Mostly she was seen using words like “ums and uhs” that sounds bad and highly unacceptable for a political public speaker. When she announced her interest in Senate seat, she sounded hesitant, less confident and uncertain, that sounds unacceptable for a political public speaker. If you can’t speak well, you may be publicly popular.

6. Carrie Prejean

What Carrie Prejean proved on Larry King Live Show, with extremely shocking words like “Larry you are being inappropriate,” sounded weird. The Ex Miss USA sounded weird and strange on the show. She threatened very badly to quit and leave the show. It can be said that she sounded a bit rude over the show. The words were even not suitable and the style of addressing even sounds very rude. If one looks closely at her expressions and behavior, she even switched off her mike in robust and anger. She repeated the “inappropriate” word so many times, that it lost its essence. This was an example of a very bad public speaking by a former beauty contest winner.

5. Barack Obama

It may be a perception in the minds of many of his fans about his extraordinary speaking skills and public love. He has so many fans as well. He has been an excellent speaker over a period of time. But according to a communication agency, he speaks in a sing-song kind manner and sounds aloof. His more emphasis is towards script and teleprompter though he never got any professional training for using it. Apart from his behavioral flaws, some of his speeches suffer from minor communication flaws. He often makes gaffes while speaking spontaneously. These are so many communication flaws that a famous political figure must never have.

4. Timothy Geithner

His style of communication has been worst over the years. There sounded a lot of aloofness air and proved that he could not speak well. While announcing the financial stability plan, the style of describing and talking about economic strength did sound very appealing and attractive. Also, some points in his speech sounded irrelevant and overdone. He can be seen giving very bad expressions and gestures as well. He sounds a bit awkward and worried. Also, over committing a genuine financial mistake (income tax error), the way he confessed his mistake wasn’t that good. This kind of speaking brings him in a list of bad speakers.

3. Edward Liddy

The Ex CEO, Chairman and president of Allstate comes in a list of bad speakers. He was also the CEO of AIG group. His misunderstood communication where he called the bonuses, “distasteful”, created a problem. The AIG continued to pay out handsome bonuses. Also, when he talks about those controversial bonuses, he doesn’t sound much great.

2. Bobby Jindal

How this guy comes in the list of worst celebrity speakers? Public speaking is not an easy task. One needs special training and skills for that. Governor Bobby Jindal doesn’t seem very comfortable while his public speaking. In his Republican Response Speech part 2, he looks confused and it seems very clear that he is not at all comfortable using a teleprompter. It seems as if he is using it for the very first time. Also, one won’t see a pitch or tone variation in his voice. It sounds same throughout the speech. The part one of the speech had the same speaking flaws.

1. Asif Ali Zardari

What makes him a bad speaker? His talk to Al Jazeera sounded good when it started, but seemed very reserved and boring monotone in the end. The speech sounded good, but the hand movements and confused facial expressions made the live appearance very formal. The kind of gestures and facial expressions that he gave in public are highly unacceptable for a political leader and president.

Top Occult Secret Societies

A secret society is a club or organization whose activities and inner functioning are concealed from non-members Secret Societies are organized conspiracies working in secret to achieve a hidden agenda. Members use secrecy to protect themselves and their movement. Critics view Secret Societies as malevolent organizations working against the general will of mankind. ‘ Members may be required to conceal or deny their membership, and they are often sworn to hold the society’s secrets by an oath. Violating the oath may result in the application of severe sanctions. Like the most successful forgeries, the most effective secret societies are unknown beyond their adherents. Members may be required to deny the organization itself exists.

11. Ordo Templi Orientis

Ordo Templi Orientis is a mystic organization that was started in the early twentieth century. The group was established along the same lines as the less secretive Freemasons, and supposedly relies on ritual and occult practices as a means for members to move from one level of prestige to another within the organization. The general philosophy of the group was a belief in new age esoteric principles and practices as a method of realizing one’s true identity. Famed occultist and all-around eccentric Aleister Crowley composed much of the group’s lore, including a manifesto called the Mysteria Mystica Maxima, and he later became its head. After his death, the influence and popularity of Ordo Templi Orientis began to wane, but it still exists today and has various chapters scattered across the world, chiefly in the United States, the U.K., and other parts of Europe. As Aleister Crowley’s popularity as a new age figure has continued to grow, more and more of the teachings of the Ordo Templi Orientis have come to light. As such, the group makes much less of an attempt to be secretive today than it did in the past. This doesn’t mean that they don’t still have some bizarre practices. Chief among these is the group’s fixation on the sexual, especially their teachings on the “adoration of the phallus” and the magic of masturbation.

10. Krypteia

The Krypteia was an ancient rite of passage for promising young Spartan men who had completed their formal education. Naked and armed with only a knife, these 18-year-olds were instructed to survive by any means necessary as they patrolled the countryside in search of revolts and misdeeds. Those who survived (and indeed many did perish) were welcomed with open arms into the Spartan army. According to tradition, members of the Krypteia were permitted to kill serfs known as “Helots” without fear of blood guilt.

9. The Fenians

The Fenian Brotherhood was an Irish nationalist organization dedicated to eradicating British rule in Ireland. Founded by John O’Mahony in 1858, the American-based group hoped to achieve its aims by invading British-occupied Canada and holding it hostage in return for Ireland’s emancipation. As far-fetched as their plan may sound, it wasn’t without merit. After all, the Brotherhood counted among its members thousands of men who had fought during the American Civil War and it had the financial support of tens of thousands of Irish immigrants. Equipped with military training as well as patriotic love, the Fenians attacked Canada on three separate occasions in 1866, 1870 and 1871. On each occasion, they were repelled by a combination of Canadian voluntary forces and American government intervention. The movement eventually fell apart, but its legacy is still felt: According to many historians, the risk posed by the Fenians was one of the most important impetuses for the confederation of Canada. The Fenian Brotherhood was named in honor of the Fianna, a brave band of ancient Irish warriors.

8. The Black Hand

The Black Hand was a secret society of anti-imperialist political revolutionaries that was started in Serbia in 1912. It formed as an offshoot from Narodna Adbrona, a group that sought to unite all of the Slavic people of Europe under one country. This required the separation of Serbia from the monarchy of Austria-Hungary, which had annexed the country some years before. With this in mind, the group began disseminating anti-Austrian propaganda and training saboteurs and assassins to disrupt political rule within the province. Their plan was to incite a war between Serbia and Austria, which would give them a chance to free their country and unite the different Slavic nations as one. Black Hand would be all but forgotten today if not for their unlikely involvement in one of the biggest events of the twentieth century. In 1914, the group engineered the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The job was badly botched, and was only completed when a low-level hood named Gavrilo Princip stumbled upon the Archduke’s car and shot him to death at close range (see photo). Still, the results of the assassination were catastrophic. Within days, Austria-Hungary had declared war on Serbia, and after the allies of both countries joined the fray, the small dispute managed to escalate into WWI. The aftermath of WWI eventually led to WWII, and this led to the Cold War, which makes the Black Hand one of the most strangely influential forces of the twentieth century.

7. Majestic 12

Majestic 12 is the alleged code name of a secret committee of scientists, military leaders, and government officials, supposedly formed in 1947 by an executive order of U.S. President Harry S Truman. The alleged purpose of the committee was to investigate UFO activity in the aftermath of the Roswell incident—the supposed crash of the alien spaceship near Roswell, New Mexico, in July 1947. The Majestic 12 is an important part of the UFO conspiracy theory of an ongoing government cover up of UFO information. All the alleged original members of MJ-12 were notable for their military, government, and/or scientific achievements, and all were deceased when the documents first surfaced.

6. Vril Society

Vril is a substance described in Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s 1871 novel The Coming Race, which was later reprinted as Vril: The Power of the Coming Race. The novel is an early example of science fiction. However, many early readers believed that its account of a superior subterranean master race and the energy-form called “Vril” was accurate, to the extent that some theosophists accepted the book as truth. Furthermore, since 1960 there has been a conspiracy theory about a secret Vril Society. Speculation on Vril has not ceased. The legend has received a further layer of elaboration from recent authors like Raymond Bernard who conflate Bulwer-Lytton’s “Coming Race” with speculations about interior civilizations which live on the inside of the Hollow Earth. (The concept of a hollow earth was first advanced by Edmond Halley at the end of the seventeenth century.) By contrast, Bulwer-Lytton’s subterranean people dwelt in caverns within the crust of a solid earth. The world of the Vril-ya is always described as being underground tunnels, artificially lit (using Vril). The book contains no suggestion of a hollow earth; theories of this kind are only found in subsequent works. Bulwer-Lytton makes many references to the scientists of his time such as Faraday and Darwin proving the existence of Vril.

5. Ku Klux Klan

Ku Klux Klan, often abbreviated KKK and informally known as The Klan, is the name of three distinct past and present far-right organizations in the United States, which have advocated extremist reactionary currents such as white supremacy, white nationalism, and anti-immigration, historically expressed through terrorism. Since the mid-20th century, the KKK has also been anti-communist. The current manifestation is splintered into several chapters and is classified as a hate group. Klan members adopted masks and robes that hid their identities and added to the drama of their night rides, their chosen time for attacks. Many of them operated in small towns and rural areas where people otherwise knew each other’s faces, and sometimes still recognized the attackers. “The kind of thing that men are afraid or ashamed to do openly, and by day, they accomplish secretly, masked, and at night.” With this method both the high and the low could be attacked.[38] The Ku Klux Klan night riders “sometimes claimed to be ghosts of Confederate soldiers so, as they claimed, to frighten superstitious blacks. Few freedmen took such nonsense seriously.” The Klan attacked black members of the Loyal Leagues and intimidated southern Republicans and Freedmen’s Bureau workers. When they killed black political leaders, they also took heads of families, along with the leaders of churches and community groups, because people had many roles. Klan violence worked to suppress black voting. In reaction to social changes, the Klan adopted anti-Jewish, anti-Catholic, anti-Communist and anti-immigrant slants. They still exist to date.

4. Thule Society

The Thule Society, was a German occultist and völkisch group in Munich, named after a mythical northern country from Greek legend. The Society is notable chiefly as the organization that sponsored the Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (DAP), which was later transformed by Adolf Hitler into the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (Nazi Party). There is no evidence that Hitler ever attended the Thule Society. But there was great enthusiasm among Thule members for Hitler, most notably Rudolf Hess and Dietrich Eckart. The occultists believed Hitler to be the prophesied “redeemer of Germany”. They were Hitler’s first “disciples” and as such were crucial to his meteoric rise. A primary focus of Thule-Gesellschaft was a claim concerning the origins of the Aryan race. “Thule” was a land located by Greco-Roman geographers in the furthest north (often displayed as Iceland). The term “Ultima Thule” is also mentioned by the Roman poet Virgil in his pastoral poems called the Georgics. Although originally Thule was probably the name for Scandinavia, Virgil simply uses it as a proverbial expression for the edge of the known world, and his mention should not be taken as a substantial reference to Scandinavia. They identified Ultima Thule, said by Nazi mystics to be the capital of ancient Hyperborea, as a lost ancient landmass in the extreme north: near Greenland or Iceland. These ideas derived from earlier speculation by Ignatius L. Donnelly that a lost landmass had once existed in the Atlantic, and that it was the home of the Aryan race, a theory he supported by reference to the distribution of swastika motifs.

3. The Priory of Sion

After the publication of the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, a great deal of interest in the Priory of Sion has been created. The Prieuré de Sion, translated from French as Priory of Sion, is a name given to multiple groups, both real and fictitious. Unfortunately for those hoping to find and join the Priory, it is claimed fictional by many. They say it was a hoax created in 1956 by a pretender to the French Throne, Pierre Plantard. Despite this, many people still continue to believe that the Priory exists and functions to this day. The authors of the well known book, The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, misled by the hoax, stated:
1. The Priory of Sion has a long history starting in AD 1099, and had illustrious Grand Masters including Isaac Newton and Leonardo da Vinci.
2. The order protects certain royal claimants because they believe them to be the literal descendants of Jesus and his alleged wife Mary Magdalene or, at the very least, of king David.
3. The priory seeks the founding of a “Holy European Empire” that would become the next hyperpower and usher in a new world order of peace and prosperity.

2. Opus Dei

Opus Dei is an organization of the Catholic Church that emphasizes the Catholic belief that everyone is called to holiness and that ordinary life is a path to sanctity. The celibate numeraries and numerary assistants live in special centers, while associates are celibate members living in their private homes. The order was founded in Spain in 1928 by Roman Catholic priest Josemaría Escrivá with the approval of Pope Pius XII. When Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code was published, it claimed that Opus Dei was a secret organization within the Church whose aim was to defeat the Priory of Sion and those who seek to uncover the “truth” about Christianity and the alleged royal bloodline of Christ. Outside of the book, there has been a great deal of controversy over Opus Dei because of the strictness of its religious structure. The Catholic Church forbids secret societies and membership in them, and Opus Dei investigators have frequently debunked claims that this organization is acting in secrecy to further a sinister agenda.

1. Freemasonry

Freemasons are members of the largest and oldest fraternity in the world. No one knows just how old it is because the actual origins have been lost in time. This group valued privacy and tolerance.
Masons conduct their meetings using rituals and each Jurisdiction has its own ritual. However, there are similarities among its Jurisdictions. The Freemasons rely on the architectural symbolism of the medieval Masons who actually worked in stone. One of the principal symbolic tools always found in a Lodge are the square and compasses. There is no general interpretation for these tools. Often a letter G is placed there, usually is said to represent God and/or Geometry. Their moral lessons are communicated in performance of a ritual in which a candidate progresses through degrees gaining knowledge and understanding of himself, his relationship with others and his relationship with the Supreme Being.
